Doubt cast over winning photograph
A PHOTOGRAPHER who won a raft of prizes in a national contest has been accused of using images he stole from a 10-year-old image database.
Hou Xie, from Hunan Province, was the biggest winner this year in the China Photographers Association's annual contest. His work won two gold awards, a bronze, and two fourth awards among more than 180,000 competitors.
One gold award picture under Hou's name was titled "Tomorrow's Reality," and showed dying trees in a bleak landscape.
But an advertising worker, Yang Jianghui of Jiangsu Province, thought the picture was familiar when he was shown it by his boss, Chen Lianjun, as an example of how creative the photographer was, the Yangtze Evening News reported yesterday.
Yang then found the picture on a database, the only difference was Hou's photograph was a mirror image.
Yang said the photo had no byline in the database.
Chen invited Wang Nianyue, vice head of the association's Jiangsu branch, to look at the pictures and Wang said they were definitely the same, the newspaper reported.
Chen told reporters he had put his evidence online and reported the matter to the organizers of the contest.
