Doubts over detention

A WOMAN suspects her husband has been detained illegally after police took him into custfor posting information online about a strike by hundreds of taxi drivers in Hubei Province.

The woman said her husband surnamed Zhou, a former cabbie who is now an insurance salesman, has been in police custody since December 19.

Xianning City's 450 cabbies started a strike on December 16 to protest a government plan to deprive them of their taxi licenses within 10 years, Nanfang Daily reported yesterday. Dozens of protesters claimed they were detained for up to eight days by police.

Zhou's wife told the newspaper that police referred to her husband as the strike's organizer as he kept posting photos and reports about the strike on local online forums and microblogs. Zhou was taken away by police on December 19 for allegedly organizing illegal gatherings and causing social disorder, the report said.

However, she told the newspaper the detention order was dated May 20. She now suspects her husband was detained illegally.

A policeman surnamed Hu confirmed Zhou has been detained, but declined to give further details.
