Dozens held as ‘sex city’ battles vice

THIRTY-SIX police officers and “several” officials have been punished for negligence and abuse of power in Dongguan, south China’s Guangdong Province.

A total of 17 people have been prosecuted or are awaiting prosecution, Hua Jingfeng of the Ministry of Public Security told a press conference yesterday.

Hua did not reveal the nature of the punishments, though it is believed that some people might have been sacked or demoted.

The government last February launched a crackdown on prostitution in Dongguan, dubbed China’s “sex capital” following media expose of the city’s rampant sex trade.

Police and officials in the city are widely believed to have sheltered prostitution, which is a substantial contributor to its economy and jobs market.

Yan Xiaokang, its vice mayor and chief of police, was removed from his post last year.

In the past year, 1,045 people have been arrested in the city on charges of organizing or sponsoring prostitution, Hua said.

Police officers will be the first to be punished when there is evidence of a sex trade, he said.
