Dozens hurt after bank bomb blast
A CASHIER fired for allegedly stealing money threw a petrol bomb inside a bank in northwestern China yesterday morning, injuring dozens of people, some of whom jumped from a fourth-story window to escape, the local government said.
The man was caught in the evening.
Employees of the Tianzhu County Rural Credit Cooperative Union were meeting at about 8am when the former employee struck, police said.
The explosion left 49 people injured, of whom 19 suffered serious burns on the face and hands while the rest suffered slight injuries, Wang Gui, vice president of the county medical center, said last night.
The 19 seriously hurt were in stable conditions, Wang said.
The Tianzhu government said Yang Xianwen, 40, who was fired last month after being accused of embezzlement, threw a bottle filled with petrol into the conference room, setting it ablaze.
"He harbored a grudge, and committed arson in the name of revenge," the publicity department of the county's Communist Party said in a statement on its website.
Yang fled the scene, but police caught him about 5pm.
A witness who declined to be named said Yang ignited a homemade "gasoline bomb."
The witness said he saw more than 10 people throw themselves out of the window of the fourth-floor meeting room and land on the roof of a neighboring three-story building, while many others, with burns visible on their bodies, were carried out of the building on stretchers.
Police cordoned off the street after the incident.
Tianzhu, about 128 kilometers from the provincial capital of Lanzhou, is an area of pastureland stuck between deserts and mountains.
Bomb attacks are rare in China, although some disgruntled residents have set off explosions in buses and buildings in the past to complain about local grievances.
