Dozens killed as country hit by flooding, typhoon

DOZENS of people have been killed and millions affected in China as floods have hit the country’s northeast and a typhoon lashed southern provinces over recent days.

Northeast China has been hit by the worst flooding in decades.

In Jilin Province, flood water engulfed a residential compound in Hongshi Township, Huadian, around 4am on Friday, leaving 14 dead. About 200 residents have been relocated.

Jilin’s civil affairs department said 890,000 people have been affected by flooding since Wednesday, with 35,000 houses destroyed or damaged. Direct economic losses were estimated at 2.4 billion yuan (US$387 million).

In neighboring Heilongjiang Province, 11 flood-related deaths were reported on Friday and three people remain missing since flooding began on August 10. This has left three major rivers at dangerous levels.

Nearly 2 million people in Heilongjiang have been affected, with 140,000 relocated, said the provincial civil affairs department.

Floods have destroyed 2,500 houses and severely damaged at least 12,500, with direct economic losses put at 7.13 billion yuan.

In Liaoning Province, south of Jilin, floods killed one person and another is missing, with 1.52 million people affected and 12,600 evacuated, according to local civil affairs authorities.

More than 140 reservoirs in Liaoning yesterday discharged water after heavy rains. Railways and highways were cut off and bridges damaged by floods in Fushun City.

The National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs have sent teams and supplies to the areas.

By yesterday, more than 5,000 personnel from the Shenyang Military Area Command had been dispatched to join the flood relief effort.

They have rescued and relocated more than 6,000 people, said a MAC spokesman.

The National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs issued a Level IV emergency disaster relief response at 5pm yesterday, and a special work team was dispatched to affected areas to help guide efforts.

A total of 3,000 tents, 5,000 cotton quilts, 2,000 folding beds and 3,000 sleeping bags were sent.

Meanwhile, southern Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region have had to deal with a devastating typhoon, which has left at least 10 people dead and four missing.

Typhoon Utor — the strongest this year — made landfall Wednesday near Yangjiang, Guangdong, after it crossed the Philippines.

Four people were killed and four are missing following typhoon-triggered floods, which affected 1 million people, Guangdong flood control authorities said.

The typhoon moved into Guangxi on Wednesday night, bringing flooding that left six people dead and more than 650,000 affected, local authorities said.

Six tourists are missing near a scenic spot in Lipu County, local authorities said.

Meanwhile, in central China’s Hunan Province, landslides triggered by continuous rain over the past two days have left one dead and 14 others missing.
