Dozens of Chinese-speaking passengers injured in bus crash in Canada

NEARLY 60 people were injured when their tour bus rolled over and crashed on a stretch of mountain highway in the Canadian province of British Columbia on Thursday, police said.

All the 56 people aboard the ill-fated vehicle suffered some kind of injury, but no fatalities had been reported as of early Thursday evening, local police officer Norm Flemming told Xinhua.

Among the them, six suffered critical injuries, 15 had broken bones, and 35 got minor cuts and scrapes, said the officer, adding that 19 ambulances and six emergency helicopters had scrambled to help.

Both Chinese and Canadian nationals are involved, but "everybody was of Asian descent, and Chinese seemed to be the language of choice," he said. The exact number of Chinese nationals is yet to be known.

The Chinese consulate in Vancouver has been in touch with police, but information remained sketchy, said consulate spokesman Zheng Xuan. "We have not yet confirmed the identities of the passengers."

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. "Our reconstruction team is out there on site and they're going to be working on it until they have a clear picture of what happened," Flemming said.

The bus was reportedly travelling from the Okanagan Valley in the province's southern interior to Vancouver, when it hit the median and overturned. Flemming said no other vehicles were involved.

Photos of the crash site circulating on social media showed that one side of the tour bus was severely battered, with debris and bloodstains scattered around the spot.
