Dozens of workers injured after armed men attack Lanzhou construction site

NEARLY 400 unidentified armed individuals attacked workers at a construction site in Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province, on Monday, leaving at least 70 men injured, www.jcrb.com, a news website operated by Procuratorial Daily, reported today.

Three of the injured construction workers were in a critical condition, the report said.

The attackers broke into the construction site at about 5am Monday, according to witnesses and a worker at the site, surnamed Liao.

They arrived in at least seven buses with some wearing clothes and helmets that looked like police equipment, witnesses reportedly said. Some also carried walkie-talkies.

"They ran in, ransacked the place and smashed everything they could with iron bars. Some workers were still sleeping in their dorms. Those who tried to fight back were badly beaten," Liao was quoted as saying.

The workers were building a shopping mall. Property damage was still being assessed, according to the report.

Lanzhou police have launched a probe into the incident, the report said.
