Drama as SUV plunges through ice into reservoir

THREE people had a lucky escape when the sport-utility vehicle they were traveling in plunged through thin ice into a reservoir in north China’s Jilin Province.

The man, woman and child escaped through the windows of the 1 million yuan (US$163,900) Audi Q7-SUV as it sank into Niutoushan Reservoir in Changchun City on Sunday, the New Cultural Newspaper reported today.

The drama occurred around 12:10pm in the reservoir in the city’s Jiutai District, about 1 kilometer from the opening ceremony of the first Shaman Winter Fishing Festival.

It was not reported whether they were traveling on the frozen reservoir to get to the festival.

The SUV was traveling at a fast speed when it braked sharply and skidded on the ice before coming to a halt, said witnesses.

The back wheels went through thin ice and the whole vehicle was submerged in the icy water in less than five minutes.

Its occupants were clear by that time.
