Dream of living a rich hermit life dashed

A man who swindled 16 million yuan (US$2.4 million) out of his business partners in Nantong, Jiangsu Province and drove 10 hours to Weihai, Shandong Province to deposit six suitcases of banknotes was caught in the bank.

Wang Jianhua claimed his friend urgently needed the money to register a company and promised a daily interest of 1.5 percent if his business partners could lend him 16 million yuan, Modern Express reported today.

Wang withdrew the money on April 2, gave 2.5 million yuan to his mistress and relatives, stuffed the remaining cash in six suitcases and went into exile.

Wang drove 10 hours to the coastal city of Weihai where he owns a sea-view house and planned to spend the rest of his life there with a fake identity.

He was caught while depositing the money at a local bank on Monday. Four armed police officers were dispatched to escort the money back to Nantong. It took bank clerks five hours to count the cash.

Wang will be brought back to Nantong today.
