Drillmasters were drinking before brawl
DRILLMASTERS who brawled with students at a school military training exercise in Hunan Province had been drinking beforehand, it has emerged.
Students from Huangcang Middle School and their parents took to the streets on Wednesday evening to protest over the official statement into the mass fight on Sunday that left 40 students, a teacher and a military training instructor injured.
They were angry as the Longshan County report omitted to mention that the military men had been drinking beer and other alcohol before the fight, reported the Beijing Times yesterday.
The demonstrators were invited to meet governmental officials, including a vice director of the Public Security Bureau of Longshan County and the county chief.
Audio record showed that the vice director of the public security bureau admitted some drillmasters had drunk 16 bottles of beer and other liquor.
Students who took part in the meeting told the newspaper that they were unhappy that the statement did not mention that drillmasters had been drinking.
“A troublemaker”
They were also concerned that the statement would damage the reputation of their head teacher Liu Yunjie, as it described him as “a troublemaker.”
It has been reported that one military training instructor had teased a girl and was criticized by boys, which resulted in students being made to do push ups — with those who stopped trampled upon by drillmasters.
When the head teacher tried to intervene he was attacked, leading to a mass brawl between students and instructors.
However, the government statement released on Tuesday told a different story.
It said there had been a minor incident in which a female student threw sand at an instructor, surnamed Mao.
Head teacher Liu then asked some boys to engage in a play fight with Mao, during which they forced the instructor to the ground. Liu and another instructor stepped in to smooth things over.
Out for revenge
But later the head teacher felt instructors were out for revenge, pushing the students too hard during drills, as some were falling to the ground screaming.
Liu called police, which led to an argument and a physical altercation. Students joined in to protect their teacher, said the statement.
Students said Liu had just wanted to ease tensions by having students play fight with the instructor. They claimed that some drunk instructors had stirred up trouble by physically punishing students.
They also insisted that Liu called police after he saw students were injured.
A county government spokesman said the statement was accurate. It did not mention that drillmasters had been drinking as more evidence was needed at the time, he added.
The spokesman said an investigation is ongoing, adding that Liu and his students should take some of the blame.
He also said the government will pay the medical bills for Liu and the students.
All the instructors have been withdrawn by the paramilitary department in the county to receive education and training.
Two leaders of the instructors have been suspended from their posts.
Liu was also suspended.
