Drinking water tainted by factory pollution in Sichuan

Residents in Mianyang City in southwestern Sichuan Province have been advised to drink bottled water in recent days after a factory's waste discharge polluted their major water source, Xinhua reported today.

According to a statement issued by the Mianyang government last night, tailing residue from an electrolytic manganese plant in the upper reaches of Fujiang River got into the water on July 21 due to a heavy rainstorm and Mianyang's environment watchdog detected the pollution on Monday.

The government is taking measures to eliminate the pollution while monitoring water quality. To ensure safety, the government called on residents to use bottled or barreled water for drinking until the environment authorities rule out the pollution, the statement said.

Mianyang government assured a sufficient supply of safe drinking water to the public, Xinhua reported.

Fujiang River is one of the three water sources in Mianyang City and supplies drinking water to 70 percent of 300,000 local residents, the report said.
