Drive for organ donors
More than 274,000 people in Hong Kong have registered to be organ donors.
They signed up with the Centralized Organ Donation Register, Sophia Chan, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Food and Health, said on Saturday at a ceremony celebrating this year’s Organ Donation Day and the register’s ninth anniversary.
She said more than 550 organizations, enterprises and schools had supported and signed the Organ Donation Promotion Charter since its launch in June last year.
The charter’s signatories pledged to promote the culture of organ donation, said Chan.
She noted, however, that various studies showed that organ donation remained a taboo subject for some people.
Saturday’s event sought to dispel the idea that organ donation was taboo. It encouraged residents to share with their family their wish to donate their organs when they die.
“We encourage the public to have more discussions on organ donation and give it more thought so as to change their perception on the matter,” Chan said.
