Driver Faces Death Sentence If Convicted
A man went on trial in Beijing yesterday on charges that he killed two people and seriously injured another in a drunk driving hit-and-run incident.
Chen Jia, a 31-year-old dance instructor, is charged with "endangering public security by dangerous methods," which means he could face the death penalty if convicted, China News Service reported.
Chen admitted at Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court that he had drunk three bottles of wine with friends in Sanlitun, a popular bar street in Beijing.
His SUV crashed into a car stopped at a red light at 5:30am on May 9, killing its driver Chen Weining and his six-year-old daughter. Chen Weining's wife was seriously injured and a friend was also hurt.
An investigation showed that Chen's car was traveling at 110 kilometers per hour at the time.
No verdict was announced yesterday.
