Driver arrested over controversial accident
THE driver who allegedly killed a village leader in Yueqing County in east China's Zhejiang Province in a road accident has been arrested, local police announced on Tuesday night.
The death of Qian Yunhui, ruled by local police as a "common traffic accident," has sparked an outcry among villagers who believed Qian was murdered for accusing some local officials of land abuse.
The 33-year-old driver, Fei Liangyu, admitted knocking down Qian while he was driving a truck without a license at 9:45am on Christmas Day. A statement by police of Wenzhou City, which oversees Yueqing County, quoted Fei as saying he was "deeply regretful," the China Youth Daily reported.
Fei, a native of Anhui Province, bought the truck last October and was hauling materials for several companies. But he failed the driving tests twice and was described by his co-driver, Wei Xueshi, as "accustomed to high-speed driving."
