Driver, bosses fined 15m yuan for breaking bridge

A MAN who caused a bridge to collapse with his overloaded tractor-trailer, causing 15.56 million yuan (US$2.4million) in damages, has been fined and sentenced to four years in jail by a Beijing court.

The driver surnamed Zhang carried 110 tons of goods more than permitted and over the Baihe Bridge in Baoshan Town on July 19. The overwhelming weight caused the bridge to twist and collapse, the Huairou District People's Court has heard.

The 34-year-old driver and his two employers were fined 15.56 million yuan as compensation for the destroyed bridge, the Beijing News reported today.

But the three people all said they couldn't afford the pricy compensation, the paper said.
