Driver eats, fails alcohol test
A BUS driver failed a breath alcohol test after eating several pastries with an egg-yolk filling in Jinan, Shandong Province, yesterday's Shandong Business Daily reported.
Luo Hongliang was accused of driving under the influence of alcohol since he failed the test before he started work yesterday.
Police found the small amount of alcohol used in the pastries may elevate the readings, but they will conduct a blood test to determine whether Lou was intoxicated.
The bus company suspended Luo, who insisted he didn't drink any alcohol.
Later, the company organized an experiment with the snacks. Everyone who ate them failed the test. The test result of a woman who had two pastries was nearly double the value for drunk driving. The readings fell dramatically after a short time, the report said.
"The pastries will be put on our blacklist whether they cause drunk driving or not," a senior executive of the bus company told the newspaper. "We will give a lecture this afternoon to tell all drivers to ensure the safety of customers."
Alcohol is used in other packaged snacks such as Swiss rolls.
A food science professor told the newspaper alcohol is used to keep such products moist.
