Driver gets driving ban for speeding at 224kph
A DRIVER has been banned from driving for two years after he was caught speeding on a highway at 224 kilometers per hour, close to the take-off speed of an airplane.
The crazy driving took place on Wednesday morning on Expressway G25 in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province. He was quickly stopped by police and had his license immediately revoked, the Nanjing-based Modern Express reported yesterday.
A police officer watching surveillance monitors saw something like an insect flying past one screen. An alert from the surveillance system showed it was a black Toyota Crown traveling 87 percent faster than the 120kph speed limit on the road.
Surveillance video provided police with evidence.
The driver, surnamed Zheng, also installed a device to cover the last two digits of his car plate, police said.
The sedan was intercepted at a toll station. The driver claimed a friend sitting in the car had just lost his mother and needed to rush back to Nanjing to make funeral arrangements.
The driver also was fined 2,200 yuan (US$321).
Traffic police said that maximum design speed for a Toyota Crown is 260kph. Driving at 224kph could harm the engine, they said.
Police also said it is hard for a driver to see clearly at that speed. Even small debris could cause the speeding vehicle to lose control, they said.
