Driver in murderous rampage

At least eight people were killed, 20 others injured and dozens of vehicles damaged when a bulldozer driver went on a murderous rampage in a county in north China's Hebei Province yesterday.

Li Xianliang, 38, had been detained, local authorities reported last night.

Li, a driver at the Hongyun Coal Depot in Nanzuo Township in Yuanshi County went on the rampage at about 3:47pm on a road near the coal depot after he quarreled with a client and murdered him, Xinhua news agency quoted a Yuanshi government spokesman as saying.

Li, from Chicun Village, had been drinking, the spokesman said. He did not specify how the client died.

In his deadly rampage, Li drove into dozens of vehicles, including cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles. Even roadside shops and houses were targeted, Xinhua said.

Li was said to have been driving erratically at the coal yard, according to Yzdsb.com.cn, website of the local Yanzhao Metropolis Daily.

The client was killed there and several vehicles and buildings at the yard were damaged.

He then drove the bulldozer onto the highway, crashing into more than a dozen vehicles, including four or five coal trucks and a minibus.

Li even drove his vehicle to a local township market to ram into crowds there, according to the website.

Yuanshi County is 30 kilometers from the provincial capital of Shijiazhuang City.

A similar incident early this year in neighboring Tianjin Municipality left 10 people dead and 11 injured.

In the Tianjin rampage on February 1, Zhang Yimin drove a bus into pedestrians and cyclists in the city's Free Trade Zone as he tried to escape from police after he had stabbed a co-worker.
