Driver jumps in river, nearly drowns trying to avoid alcohol test

A driver thought to have been drunk dived into a river to avoid a police road check late Friday evening in Liuzhou in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and nearly drowned, local media reports said.

But either the 30-year-old man burned up some of what he'd drunk during the escape attempt or wasn't so inebriated after all -- after he was pulled out of the water, he passed a breath test for alcohol and the police had to let him go, reports said.

The drama took place about 8:50pm when police stopped the driver's car for a regular drunk-driving check near a local river.

Police smelled alcohol on the driver's breath and asked him to pull over for a breath test.

When police insisted, the driver got out and dashed to the bank, climbed down a ladder and dived into the river.

He ignored police calls to return and continued swimming. But he started screaming for help and was nearly drowning when he neared the center of river, police said.

Police managed to throw him a lifesaving float and he was saved. He managed to swim back with the help of the float.

He had been swimming for about 10 minutes before he could go no farther and had to return.

He reportedly admitted to having drunk about half a glass of beer and was on his way to a coffee store when he was stopped by police.

The man was let go with a warning by police, the report said.
