Driver under arrest after Hong Kong tram crash

THE driver of a double-decker tram that tipped over in Hong Kong injuring 14 people was arrested yesterday on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Five women and nine men, including the driver, were injured, with some taken to hospital, police said.

The incident, rare for the city’s highly efficient public transport network, occurred around midnight.

A police spokesman said the 23-year-old driver, surnamed Lo, was being questioned.

News footage on local TV showed firefighters at the scene, and one person wearing an oxygen mask while being carried out of the tram on a stretcher.

The tram was righted shortly afterward.

It was the second incident on Hong Kong’s public transport network this year, usually regarded as one of the safest and best infrastructure systems in the world, and one where accidents are uncommon.

In February, 17 people were injured when fire engulfed a subway train, triggering the evacuation of Tsim Sha Tsui station — a major hub — during rush hour. Police later arrested a man for arson.

Trams, known as “ding-dings” from the sound of their bells, have serviced the city’s main island for more than a century and carry around 200,000 passengers a day.

With around 160 cars, the tram network is the world’s largest fleet of double-decker tramcars still in operation, charging a flat rate of HK$2.30 (30 US cents) for adults to ride a 120-stop route.
