Drop in number of registered drug users

China had 2.345 million registered drug users at the end of last year, 605,000 fewer than in 2014, the National Narcotics Control Commission Office said yesterday in its annual report.

Males accounted for 85.6 percent while relapsed drug users made up 54.4 percent of the total. Some 69 percent were unemployed. Professionals, officials and celebrities accounted for just 0.4 percent.

Around 1.42 million users were aged between 18 and 35, 237,000 fewer than in 2014. The number of drug users under the age of 18 increased, however, from 29,000 in 2014 to 43,000 in 2015, the report said.

Synthetic drugs were the choice of 1.34 million, or 57.1 percent of drug users. Their use is on the increase, with the percentage 32.7 in 2011, 38 in 2012, 42.6 in 2013 and 49.4 in 2014.

More traditional opiates, such as heroin, was favored by 980,000 or 41.8 percent in 2015, as their use declined from 64.5 percent in 2011, 59.3 in 2012, 53.6 in 2013 to 49.3 in 2014.

Drug users committed 174,000 offenses or 14 percent of the national total last year, which was 25,000 more than in 2014.

About 41 percent related to theft and robbery. They also included 716 cases of driving while under the influence of drugs, violent attacks, kidnapping, rape and murder. During the year, 146,000 drivers had their licenses revoked due to drug use, according to the report.
