Drop of lawsuit by victim family fuels debate
CONTROVERSY swirled in Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province, after a victim's family withdrew a lawsuit against a driver who killed their son in a road accident because they were paid 460,000 yuan (US$71,000) in compensation, Guangzhou Daily reported today.
Prosecutors of the city's Jianghai District denied the allegation that money can override the justice of law, saying it was a normal traffic accident involving only one death and the charge could be withdrawn according to law.
Chen Xizhang, attorney general of Jianhai District, said the driver surnamed Long turned himself in after the accident last December and he also reached an compensation agreement with the victim's family who later appealed to Chen for leniency.
The company, of which Long was the sales director, also wrote letters to the district prosecutors, saying Long's imprisonment would affect its business.
