Drought ravages southern China

CHRONIC drought is causing havoc in southern Guangdong, Fujian and central Hunan provinces, with tens of thousands of people short of drinking water and large areas of crops affected, said drought relief authorities at the weekend.
More than 50,000 people face water shortages and more than 553,000 hectares of farmland were damaged due to less rainfall this year, about 13 percent under average levels, said Guangdong Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters. Water reserves in 32 key reservoirs in Guangdong sat at 11.78 billion cubic meters last Friday, a drop of 3.51 billion cubic meters since last year.
Quanzhou City in Fujian Province has seen no rainfall over the past 57 consecutive days, leaving nearly 12,000 hectares of crops parched and five reservoirs empty.
