Drug addict uses pregnancy to bypass law
A 23-year-old drug addict who took advantage of her pregnancy to steal from government buildings in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was caught but had to be set free by law, China News Service reported today.
The woman surnamed Ge was caught by Wuchuan County police on Sunday when she sneaked into the county government building for theft. Police found a screwdriver and some stolen items in her bag.
During the interrogation, Ge confessed her crimes and her history of drug abuse. However, she claimed she was pregnant and police could not detain her. An examination by the local Wuchuan Hospital confirmed her pregnancy.
Ge claimed that she had to steal money to buy drugs because she was single and had no income. To avoid police detention, Ge got pregnant on purpose and committed thefts frequently in local government buildings, the report said.
Eventually, Wuchuan police had to release her according to the law, but the police also sent officers to keep an eye on her while conducting an investigation into her crimes.
