Drug dealer leaps to his death

A DRUG dealer jumped to his death from a 10th-floor apartment after shooting and injuring a policeman in Chengdu, capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province, yesterday.

Police said they launched an operation to apprehend a drug dealer in a residential community at about 11am when the suspect suddenly took out a handgun and shot at them.

One officer was shot in his right shoulder and he is being treated in a local hospital where his condition is said to be stable.

Police evacuated residents from the community and surrounded the suspect’s apartment.

Four people were in the apartment, according to a report in the West China Metropolis Daily. The newspaper said the police faced fierce resistance from the four who kept firing until they ran out of ammunition.

The suspects tried to set fire to the apartment after they were surrounded by police, the newspaper said.

When a SWAT team broke in about 2pm, one of the suspects jumped from the window. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses said police took away a man and a woman about 2:50pm. They said the man was wearing a white T-shirt and the woman was wearing a pink dress.

Police said a fourth suspect escaped and was on the run. Their investigation is ongoing.
