Drug dealer’s death leap
A DRUG dealer jumped to his death from a 10th-floor apartment after shooting and injuring a policeman in Chengdu, capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province yesterday.
Police said they had launched an operation to apprehend the dealer in a residential community at about 11am when the suspect suddenly produced a handgun and shot at them.
One officer was hit in the right shoulder and was taken to a local hospital where his condition last night was said to be stable.
Police evacuated residents from the community and surrounded the suspect’s apartment.
Four people were in the apartment, according to a report in the West China City Daily.
The newspaper said police faced fierce resistance from the four who kept firing until they ran out of ammunition.
The suspects tried to set fire to the apartment after they were surrounded by police, the newspaper said.
When a SWAT team broke into the apartment at 1:53pm one of the suspects jumped from the window.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses said police took away a man and a woman at around 2:50pm.
Police told the newspaper that a fourth suspect was still on the run. They said their investigations were continuing.
