Drug dealers' executions postponed
THE Philippine vice president said yesterday China was to postpone the executions of three Filipinos convicted of drugs charges.
Jejomar Binay traveled to Beijing yesterday with a letter from Philippine President Benigno Aquino III to President Hu Jintao seeking clemency. Binay also appealed to Wang Shengjun, president of China's supreme court.
The three was due for execution on Monday and Tuesday, and would have been the first Filipinos to be put to death in China for drug trafficking.
Reading out a joint statement after the meetings, Binay said the Chinese side told him of "the decision of the Supreme People's Court to postpone the execution within the scope of Chinese law."
Sometimes death penalties in China are set aside for two years and, if the convict shows good behavior, the sentence is commuted to life in prison.
Filipino officials say the three were paid to take packages to China they thought were legal cargo but which contained heroin.
Sally Ordinario-Villanueva, a 32-year-old mother of two, Ramon Credo, a 42-year-old father of five, and Elizabeth Batain, 38, were arrested separately in 2008.
