Drug firm probed after ‘moms’ fall sick
Authorities in east China’s Zhejiang Province are investigating a local pharmaceutical company after more than 170 pregnant women claimed to have fallen ill after receiving injections of progesterone made by the company.
The provincial food and drug watchdog said it is talking to Tianjin Kingyork Group Co, which produces the Shuangyan branded product, and has ordered a halt to its sale and use, National Business Daily reported yesterday.
The firm denied any problems with the product, saying that anyone who fell ill was likely given a wrong dose.
Samples of the drug, which is given to mothers-to-be in the belief it will prevent them from miscarrying, have been sent for testing, the Zhejiang Health and Family Planning Commission was quoted as saying.
The watchdog said the majority of women who allegedly fell in were in Wenzhou and Jiaxing, with other cases reported in the provincial capital Hangzhou.
The first case was reported by the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University on August 24, the report said.
An official was quoted as saying the drug had been administered in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Tianjin Kingyork was cited by thepaper.cn as saying the product had been given to pregnant women in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in 2014 with no ill effects.
