Drug jailings up by 17%
THE number of people jailed for drug offences in China increased by almost 17 percent last year, the country's top court said yesterday.
Some 74,670 people were jailed in 2011 for involvement in 69,244 drug cases, the China Supreme People's Court told a news conference.
This was up 16.9 percent on the number jailed in 2010.
Meanwhile, the court published details of a number of drugs cases on its website.
In one case, a man was sentenced to death for manufacturing and selling 160 kilograms of ketamine.
Wang Daqing was convicted of making the drug in southwestern Sichuan Province and delivering and trafficking it in southern Guangdong Province between 2007 and 2009.
