Drug lord gets death for Mekong River massacre
Naw Kham, the main suspect in the murder of 13 Chinese sailors on the Mekong River last year, was sentenced to death this afternoon by the Kunming City Intermediate People's Court in Yunnan Province.
Three of his five arrested followers also received death penalty, according to the state-run CCTV.
Naw Kham, a notorious drug lord in the Golden Triangle bordering Myanmar, Thailand and Laos, attacked, hijacked and finally murdered 13 Chinese sailors on two cargo ships, the Hua Ping and Yu Xing 8, on October 5, 2011 on the Mekong River.
He denied plotting the attack in a court hearing in Kunming on September 20. However, other five defendants all testified that he was their leader and was the mastermind behind the attack.
All the six have been charged with murder, drug trafficking, kidnapping and hijacking.
