Drugs and millions in cash seized by police

A DRUGS gang in Anyang City, Henan Province, has been smashed, and police have seized more than 3.8 tons of drugs and over 120 million yuan (US$19 million) in cash.

Nine suspects were detained, including alleged ringleader Cui Yanyun and her husband Li Wuzhi. Most of the suspects were relatives of this couple, Xinhua news agency reported.

The gang are said to have produced and sold rave-drug mephedrone, which it is said can induce hallucinations and cause mental damage. Police say the damage can be just short of that caused by heroin.

Anyang police first received a report in November last year, saying a man surnamed Yuan in Tangyin County was producing the drug at home.

The police found Yuan's factory and discovered the manager of a local chemical factory named Zhang Baoliang had a close relation with him. As police watched Zhang, Cui Yanyun and Li Wuzhi were also identified.

Police detained eight suspects, including Cui Yanyun and Zhang.

They also seized more than 80 million yuan in cash and 2.8 tons of mephedrone.

Cui is said to have confessed that since December 2009, the conspirators bought 15.7 tons of mephedrone at 700 yuan a kilogram from Zhang and another man, Chang Hua in Tianjin, the business manager of a medicine and chemical company, and then sold them to addicts in Shanxi Province at 14,000 yuan per kilogram.
