Drugs spread in China at alarming rate

NEW types of narcotics are spreading unchecked through secondary cities in China with registered drug users in southern Guangdong Province alone reaching 240,000.

The new generation of drugs, including Ketamine, ecstasy and crystal meth, have taken the role of heroin as the most popular drugs in disco bars and karaokes in rural China, Guangzhou-based Southern Daily reported today.

The report said drug users in Guangdong Province squander over 10 billion yuan every year on drugs. Those who got addicted were all young people who take drugs as a necessity when socializing.

More than 20 young people died from taking drugs in a village this year, the report said. Despite the government crackdown on narcotics, drugs have spread from big cites to over 1,000 secondary cities and counties in China.

Instead of being smuggled in over the border, drugs in rural China were mostly home-made, the report said. Some were concocted in family workshop and hidden from police checks.
