Drunk Driver To Appeal Against Life Term
A drunk driver who killed two people and injured two others is to appeal against a sentence of life imprisonment handed down by a Beijing court yesterday.
A lawyer for 31-year-old Chen Jia said the sentence of the No. 2 Intermediate People's Court of Beijing was too harsh.
Chen was convicted of endangering public safety by hazardous means, a charge which carries a maximum sentence of death.
Chen's family were also ordered to pay 3.66 million yuan (US$563,786) compensation to the victims' families, the court ruled.
Chen had been drinking on May 9, 2010, before his vehicle collided with a car and then a bus in downtown Beijing. The car driver and his six-year-old daughter died.
