Drunk driver backs up traffic trying to avoid police checkpoint

A drunk driver had his licensed suspended for six months after he backed up traffic for three hours while trying to avoid a police checkpoint in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, West China Metropolis Daily reported today.

Chengdu police set up a checkpoint at a major intersection last night to test drivers for alcohol. At about 11:30pm, a Land Rover stopped 50 meters in front of the checkpoint before suddenly speeding toward it, the report said, citing police.

Several police officers used their vehicles to block the Land Rover.

When police officer Wang Yongquan approached the vehicle, the driver, surnamed Liu, closed all the windows, locked the doors and refused to speak to him, the report said.

Wang told the newspaper he could still smell alcohol.

Liu and a man sitting beside him, both in their 30s, then started making phone calls for the next hour. They also ignored police warnings and refused to talk to officers, the report said.

At about 2:20am today, they opened the Land Rover's sunroof and Wang sprayed them with pepper spray. The pair then exited the vehicle and were detained by police, according to the newspaper.

Police gave Liu a breathalyzer test, which recorded alcohol content of 66.2mg/100ml, above the allowable limit, the report said.

According to police, Liu's license will be suspended for six months and he also faces a 1,000 yuan (US$160.9) fine.
