Drunk driver sent to jail

A MAN in Henan Province was jailed four months yesterday for drunk driving.

Hou Guanghui, a villager from Houying Village in Wugang City, became the country's first drunk driver to be given a prison sentence for the offense after an amendment to the Criminal Law went into effect on May 1.

Under the amended law, drunk drivers who cause "severe consequences" face criminal penalties and can be jailed up to six months.

Hou accepted the verdict and said he wouldn't appeal.

The villager was caught by traffic police when he came to the intersection of Gangcheng Road and Tieshan Avenue in Wugang City about 8:40pm on May 1.

Hou was found with 223.7 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. The standard for drunk driving is 80 mg/100 ml.

Hou was detained by Wugang City Public Security Bureau on May 4.

To crack down on drunk driving, prosecutors decided to quickly deal with such cases.

It took prosecutors only three hours to bring charges against Hou in the Wugang City People's Court.

The court heard the case yesterday afternoon.

Hou was also fined 2,000 yuan (US$308).
