Drunk driver sentenced to death for killing 4 people

A MAN who killed four people and seriously injured another while driving drunk in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, was sentenced to death yesterday for endangering public safety.

Chengdu Intermediate People's Court announced the sentence yesterday, saying Sun Weiming was drunk on December 14 when he was speeding and smashed into four cars in the opposite lane, Shanghai Morning Post reported today. Sun fled the accident scene afterwards.

Sun had driven without a license since May 2008 and had several traffic violation offenses, the court said.

Police said Sun was going 134 to 138km/h before the collision in a 60km/h zone, the report said.

A judge in the case said Sun completely ignored the safety of others.

Sun said he would appeal the sentence, according to the report.
