Drunk law maker on trial for killer crash
A CITY legislator of east China's Zhejiang Province went on trial yesterday for drunk driving in a crash that left four people dead and six others injured, Zhejiang Gold newspaper reported today.
Yang Shuzhong, a deputy of both the county-level and municipal People's Congresses in Sanmen County, Taizhou City, admitted the charge of threatening public security. More than 50 Taizhou law makers heard the trial, the newspaper said.
Yang had drunk four bottles of Hennessey XO with four other people on April 5 before his black BMW hit eight vehicles at 8:12pm, Taizhou Intermediate People's Court was told.
Roadside tests showed the legislator, 48, had 330 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood, four times the legal limit of 80mg.
Yang offered compensation to the victims' families ranging from 580,000 yuan (US$74,674) to 610,000 yuan. The families agreed to ask the court for leniency in punishment.
Yang owns a medical chemical company in Sanmen. One of his products, procaine hydrochloride, accounts for 80 percent of the global market. His company also cooperated with Zhejiang University in medical chemistry and was the most profitable local enterprise. Yang is also known as a generous philanthropist and a kind boss.
