Drunk lawmaker kills 4

A CITY legislator of east China's Zhejiang Province has been detained for drunk driving that left four people dead and six others injured, local public security authority said yesterday.

Yang Shuzhong, a deputy of both the county-level and municipal people's congresses in Sanmen County, Taizhou City, was in police custody after he hit eight vehicles with his Black BMW around 8:12pm on Monday, said Yang Zhen, publicity officer with the Public Security Bureau of Sanmen.

Immediate tests showed the legislator, 48, had been drunk driving as his blood alcohol level was 330 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood, well above the legal limit of 80mg.

With approval of the standing committees of people's congresses of Sanmen and Taizhou, Yang Shuzhong was detained on suspicion of threatening public security by dangerous means yesterday morning.

The suspect owns a medical chemical company in Sanmen. One of his products, procaine hydrochloride, accounted for 80 percent of global market. His company also cooperated with Zhejiang University in medical chemistry and was the most profitable enterprise locally. Yang was also known as a generous philanthropist and a kind boss to his employees.
