Drunk threat leads to town blackout

A POWER station boss in central China has been fired after a member of his party had half a town plunged into darkness during a drunken dispute with KTV bar staff.
Up to 5,000 users were affected by the blackout in Qixian County in Henan Province, the Legal Evening News reported yesterday.
The Hebi City Electric Power Company confirmed that Yang Shuseng, chief of the Zhaoge Township Power Supply Station, and five of his staff, including two surnamed Wang, were involved in an incident at the KTV bar in Qixian.
It said Yang had been dismissed, a subordinate named Wang Haixiao was suspended for two years and the other four received administrative punishments or warnings.
Trouble flared when a man, falsely claiming to be a director of the power station surnamed Wang, led a group of young men into a KTV bar on the afternoon of November 2.
Within an hour they downed several bottles of imported spirits and dozens of bottles of beer and then demanded a bottle of imported liquor on the house.
When KTV bar staff refused, they began smashing up the room.
During the disturbance members of the group are said to have threatened that their “electric tiger” — the power station director — would cut off electricity to the premises. “Then we’ll see how you can earn money,” group members reportedly said.
The self-proclaimed director Wang was heard making a call claiming that the area had experienced power failures and urging for power to be shut down while repairs were carried out.
About 10 minutes, half of downtown Qixian plunged into darkness for a short period.
Hebi City Electric Power Company didn’t say who made the malicious call.
The general manager and the Party chief of the electricity administration in Qixian were also criticized, the electricity company said.
