Dumped baby battles for life

A NEWBORN boy is struggling for survival on a respiratory machine in a south China hospital after his wounded body was dumped by his mother in a trash can.

Police in Sanshui District in Guangdong Province's Foshan City yesterday caught the mother after checking security video at the dormitory for Zhonglu Hotel where the baby was discarded, police told today's Guangzhou Daily.

The 19-year-old mother surnamed Zhou, a Hunan Province native cashier at the hotel, confessed she had dumped the baby. Police are still investigating whether she harmed him.

The baby was wrapped in a plastic bag and had cuts across his body, including seven wounds in his neck.

A patrolling manager heard his cries at midnight on Sunday, the hotel's vice general manager Lu Xiujuan told the newspaper.

Doctors with Sanshui People's Hospital said they had operated on the baby, but his life was in danger for at least the next week.
