Each year 550,000 succumb to cardiac arrest in China

ABOUT 550,000 Chinese die from by sudden cardiac arrest every year and few than 1 percent of patients survive, medical experts told a health forum yesterday.
People with coronary heart disease and a history of cardiac arrest belong to a high risk group.
The first seven to 10 minutes after the attack is the golden time for survival and the survival rate drops by 10 percent with every minute of delay in emergency treatment.
"However over 80 percent of cases take place when patients are at home or are alone," said Dr Ge Junbo, director of Zhongshan Hospital's cardiology department. "Most of the patients are already dead before they can get first aid."
Experts said the timely use of automated external defibrillator can effectively save a patient's life. But even in the United States where AED devices are available in most public venues, the survival rate of sudden cardiac arrest is only 5 percent.
"For people in the high risk group, an implanted cardioverter defibrillator could be a solution," Ge said. "ICD can detect the onset of a sudden cardiac arrest within ten seconds and generate an electric pulse to trigger the heartbeat."
