Earthquake cash homes razed in planning row

HOMES built with earthquake relief funds in a town in Sichuan Province have been demolished because they were constructed on land later earmarked for an industrial park.

Some 66.7 hectares in Guangyuan City were cleared to make way for the project, which is backed by Chaotian District government.

However, only 30.8 hectares had been approved by the provincial government for the industrial park, China Central Television reported.

When applying for the land, Guangyuan City government said the site would be used for government and public facilities and no arable land would be occupied.

And the industrial park, which already occupies part of the site, has attracted only three companies - occupying just 4.7 hectares.

In the rest of the area, villagers, aided by government subsidies and post-earthquake reconstruction projects, rebuilt homes devastated in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. The area also included 28 hectares of farmland.

All the homes have been demolished, the report said. "Only one year after we built our house, they pulled it down. I don't understand why they wasted so much money," villager Yang Xiushan said.

Chaotian District has invested 90 million yuan (US$14 million) in the industrial park. Yan Fengnan, deputy director of Chaotian District Bureau of Foreign Trade and Economics, told CCTV no progress had been made in attracting investment there.
