Earthquake causes 17-car collision
AN earthquake hit a remote county in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region yesterday, causing a 17-car pile-up which left five people injured, two severely.
The 5.3-magnitude quake jolted Toksun County of Turpan Prefecture at 9:53am, according to the China Earthquake Network Center.
Toksun County is about 160 kilometers from Urumqi, the regional capital.
The quake caused rocks to roll down a mountain and on to a road in Dabancheng District, forcing a driver to slam on his brakes and starting a 17-car collision, said Zhang Qirui, a road bureau official.
The quake was followed by two large aftershocks the center said. Railway services on two major routes were suspended for two hours for safety checks.
More than 800 students taking the national college entrance exam in Toksun County were evacuated when the quake struck.
They were allowed back to finish the exam after the scare was over.
