Edible oils fail tests for carcinogens
Edible oil and roasted nuts have been found to contain cancer-causing chemicals in tests carried out nationwide by safety authorities.
The findings were among a series of test results announced by China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine on its website.
Its tests covered 2,686 products from 2,615 companies in 28 categories, including food, furniture and construction, agricultural and industrial materials.
A total of 263 products failed to pass checks including 11 batches of edible oil and two batches of roasted nuts.
The administration has ordered regional quality authorities to punish companies whose products failed the tests.
Tests were carried out on 180 edible oil products from 180 producers in 12 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. None of the companies was from Shanghai.
All products underwent checks for several substances, including carcinogens lead, aflatoxin and benzoapyrene.
Soybean oil from Jilin Tianxialiangcang Trade Co and Heilongjiang Baqi Grain and Oil Co were found to have excessive levels of benzoapyrene, which is highly carcinogenic.
The amount detected was two to three times the permitted level under Chinese standards.
Among 90 samples of toasted seeds and nuts checked by the administration, roasted peanuts from Hangzhou Hongfu Food Co were found with levels of aflatoxin almost three times the permitted level.
Aflatoxin can cause liver cancer.
The administration had some reassurance for the public, however.
Its tests showed there was no evidence of harmful material leaking from plastic bottles into edible oil, something that had been a matter of public concern.
