Editor beaten over critical story

A DEPUTY editor-in-chief at a north China newspaper has been seriously injured in an apparent revenge attack over a critical news story.

Yue Qian of Hebei Youth Daily was attacked by a man on Saturday night at her apartment building in Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei Province, the Beijing-based news Website Qianlong.com reported yesterday.

The attacker repeatedly hit her on the head and face with a brick, saying, "Why did you report it?" she told the Website. When a neighbor heard her shouts for help and came to her aid, the attacker fled.

Yue suffered a swollen face and head and received eight stitches to repair her injured mouth.

Yue told police her newspaper earlier received a phone call from an unidentified woman asking it not to publish critical reports or there could be revenge. But the caller refused to specify which story she was concerned about, Yue said.

Police are investigating.
