Egg-like mobile home faces destruction

A man living in a self-made egg-shaped mobile hut is facing possible destruction of his nest, as Beijing authorities decided the offbeat dwelling illegal.

Officials in charge of urban management in Haidian District said the hut, which was made of bamboo strips, has violated regulations requiring official approval and safety examination for any construction, Beijing News reported today.

Officials said they yesterday told the hut owner, Dai Haifei, a 24-year-old employee of an architectural firm who couldn't afford a real home, to tear down the house. But they didn't give him a deadline, the newspaper said.

Dai's company, whose designs inspired Dai to build the two-meter-high home, said both Dai and the company have been under great pressure following the media exposure. They didn't want to make more comments.

The company previously showed a tolerant and supportive attitude towards Dai's house and provided free water and electricity for Dai's mobile home.

"I figured Dai might give up the house," said one of Dai's colleagues, surnamed Liu. "Dai is a new comer in the company and he won't let this affect his career."

The company was informed by Haidian authorities to take over Dai's house.
