Eight workers trapped in tunnel

RESCUERS have identified the eight workers who have been trapped for more than 18 hours after a tunnel under construction collapsed in Sanya City in south China's Hainan Province, the tunnel constructor said yesterday.

They are Qiu Fuyi, Wang Shiqiang, Cui Yongqiu, Zeng Tao, Lu Ruizhi, Gao Chao, Lu Yunhong and Gao Feng, rescuers said.

The men could not be contacted by mobile phone so rescuers tried to contact them by knocking on the tunnels. They heard a response, which indicates survivors.

As the tunnel is funnel-shaped, it is difficult for the excavation. Heavy rains also brought difficulties, rescuers said.

The sandy shale and erosion common to the area make collapses likely, said Wen Junliang, chief engineer of Changsha Road and Bridge Construction Company.

The accident occurred about 11:30pm on Thursday, said project chief Gao Ya.

Wang Yong, mayor of Sanya, was at the scene directing the rescue work with more than 100 firefighters, police and medical staff. Two excavators and one loader were being used.
