Elevators halted in 12-story buildings after power bills unpaid
OPERATION of 17 elevators in three, 12-story residential buildings has been suspended for five days in a Beijing community due to unpaid electricity bills, a local newspaper reported today.
An initial investigation showed the former property management company of the residential area in Tongzhou District did not pay the electricity bills in time. The company bowed out in July.
The debacle left the community 69,000 yuan (US$11,265) behind in paying for three months’ worth of power bills, which the owner’s committee hasn’t been able to come up with.
Residents living in the 12-story buildings complained that they have not been able to use the elevator since August 30. The elderly and children have avoided going downstairs because of the inconvenience, said the report.
“I am rather tired after working a whole day, but still have to climb stairs to get home,” said a young resident living on the 10th floor.
