Embassy condemns attack in Sydney
THE Chinese Embassy in Australia yesterday condemned an attack by Tibetan separatists on the Chinese Consulate General in Sydney on Wednesday.
“This is a very serious attack on diplomatic and consular institutions, which fully exposes the violent nature of the Tibetan separatists,” the embassy said.
Tibetan separatists stormed the forecourt of the Chinese Consulate General in Sydney, with one climbing up a pole to pull down the Chinese flag.
A 38-year-old woman assaulted a consulate officer while the victim was trying to stop the mob from entering the building, the embassy said.
She was one of five women among 10 people detained by New South Wales police.
A police spokeswoman said eight people had been charged and will appear in court.
The embassy said it made serious representations to the Australian government, demanding the perpetrators be penalized to the full extent of the law.
It also asked Australian authorities “to take concrete and effective measures, strengthen the protection of Chinese diplomatic and consular institutions and personnel, and ensure the inviolable safety, security and dignity of Chinese institutions and personnel.”
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issued a statement yesterday that said: “The Australian government takes very seriously its obligations to protect the safety and dignity of foreign diplomatic and consular missions and condemns all forms of violent protest.”
