Emergency drill at airport in Hong Kong

Hong Kong International Airport yesterday conducted its annual aircraft crash and rescue exercise to test its readiness and efficacy in handling contingencies.

More than 1,000 people from about 100 organizations and government departments took part in the exercise.

The drill was for the participants to familiarise themselves with emergency procedures and to work together on handling emergency incidents.

At 2am yesterday morning, the exercise started when a simulated arrival flight with 130 people onboard mistakenly entered a taxiway not assigned for its use after landing. The aircraft’s starboard engine hit a construction site hoarding and crashed into an adjacent diesel generator. The aircraft caught fire and there was heavy smoke in the cabin.

The staff of the air traffic control tower immediately activated the crash alarm.

The Airport Emergency Center was activated to facilitate communications and coordination among various departments and organizations. A mobile liaison center was set up to coordinate the field activities with units of government departments at the scene of the incident.

Each year, HKIA conducts more than 100 drills, exercises and training seminars on operational disruption and emergency response scenarios, such as severe weather, system failures, and equipment malfunctions.
